Thrills, Spills, and Spandex

By TXRD Newsroom February 1, 2016

Attention TXRD fans, class is in session! Texas Roller Derby has been bringing the thrills, spills, and spandex for the past decade and a half, but the story of its incarnation is as exciting as the sport itself. As our 15th Anniversary season kicks off, we want to give our fans a history lesson on the league’s beginnings and the birth of roller derby, right here in the heart of Texas!

As with so many brilliant ideas, TXRD was the result of a collaboration between a group of badass women. After having been brought together as part of a multimedia show in Austin, Texas, featuring live music, video screens and a banked track, the women decided they’d rather run their own show.

They resolved to revive the old-school spectacle of 1970s roller derby and transform it into a competitive sport to captivate modern audiences. Thus, Bad Girl Good Woman productions was born, and with it, the revival of roller derby that has since become an international phenomenon!

While members of the organization eventually branched out to create the sport of flat-track derby, the She-E-Os of BGGW were determined to keep the magic of the banked track alive. TXRD continues to honor the derby of old, combining the theatrical elements of the 1970s tradition with the skill and athletic excellence that define the sport today. Where else in the world can you watch a derby bout that features relay races, pillow fights, and other penalty competitions between modern-day female gladiators? Only here in Austin!

Come out on February 21st and help us keep the tradition alive!
