Roller Derby Training and Tryouts

By TXRD Newsroom August 1, 2016

Here’s how it starts: you’re in the stands at the Thunderdome, watching the glorious women of Texas Roller Derby zip around the track and knock the ever-living crap out of each other as the crowd around you loses its collective mind, and it hits you — I want to do this.

Roller Derby! I want to do this.

Hell yeah, you do! And guess what? You don’t have to wait until next year to show TXRD what you’ve got. We’re holding another tryout on August 6th! I know what you’re probably thinking. That’s not a lot of time to prepare! Don’t sweat it, newbie. We’ve got some great resources available to get you ready to crush it at tryout time

For those just getting comfortable on skates, TXRD affiliate program Derby Academy is a great place to start. Led by TXRD alumni Lacy Bones and Str8 Jacket, Academy offers a beginner level, where skaters can learn the basic stops, falls, and maneuvers they will be expected to perform during the tryout, as well as an intermediate level for those who are ready to start blocking. There are 5 weeks left in the current summer session, so now is a great time to jump in!

Think you’re ready to take it to the next level? Awesome! Our Wreck League gives skaters of all experience levels the opportunity to get bouting experience while continuing to develop their skills! Sunday Wreck practices typically start with skill and endurance drills, led by an ever-changing squad of TXRD skaters, and end with some scrimmaging.

For more information, check out the links above and the flier below, and when tryout time rolls around (pun intended), you’ll be ready to hit the track with confidence!
