Lady A’s Recap–ASA vs HR

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Hey y’all! Here’s my $.02 for the evening:
Great crowd! It was wall-to-wall people. I guess everyone else was jonesing to see some derby as badly as I was. Both teams started off skating really strong. Smarty was working her ass off–I think there were very few jams where she wasn’t jamming or blocking. Sacralicious was skating like hell’s afire (Pinto insisted that her eyes were glowing like Darth Maul.) I think she’s gotten even faster since last year, if such a thing is possible. Cathy Lix spent a lot of time jamming–and a lot of time getting slapped around by the pack. It was definitely “welcome to derby” time! Punky did a great job blocking, as did Karma. Karma got into several fights and pulled a few penalties. Definitely a side of her we hadn’t seen before! The All-Scars looked great, too–the blockers were tight, especially Knottie Knoxville, Varuca Assault, and Purr Anna. Rocky showed off some really nice footwork–she was stepping through spots in the pack and keeping to her feet even better than before. Chola was as entertaining as ever, as only she can be. She came out especially strong in the second half.
The fourth quarter got pretty messy. The ASA had pulled away and I think there was some frustration going on and some old grudges being worked out.
We got to see lots of those match ups that we love–Rocky vs Smarty. Chola vs Sac, Smarty vs Chola. There was also a really great leap by Smarty over two fallen skaters that I seem to have been the only person in Turn 4 to see. Miss Conduct was on the Penalty Wheel, which is always enjoyable. The Red Coats (Masterblader and Wes) did well, from what I could hear of them. Sound was really tricky with the noise of the crowd.
Random trivia, for those who care–production had to shorten up the track by taking out two sections to make it fit into Palmer Events Center. Wonder if that was weird to skate on–seems like you rhythm would be a little off.
Representing in Turn 4–myself, Pinto, Dirty Sanchez, Hexx, Skunk, Grandpa, Sword, WarriorPixie, Mustang Sally, Betty Taroll, Maya, Luchador, Mr Knox, and a thousand other people that I am not remembering right now.
It’s so good to have derby back–I feel so much better!!!

BOUT RE-CAP - JUNE 9 - PLAYOFF BOUT #3 - PUTAS DEL FUEGO VS. HELLCATS

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

Saturday evening. June 9. 7pm. A palpable tension in the air. On one side - the Hellcats, near the end of the best season in their history, ready for anything those Putas can throw at them. On the other side - the Putas del Fuego. Adding to that, there were several alternates to further shake things up. Defending their honor, the Hellcats had Hunter and Kate or Dye. For the Putas, Cocochina, crowd alternate favorite Titz McGee, and Lucky Harm skating as Dona Suerte.

The Putas won the first jam, with Chola getting the lead on Knottie Knoxville, and put one point on the scoredboard. The Hellcats worked hard, but couldn’t break through the line of Puta blockers. That didn’t dampen the Hellcat spirit one bit, and in the 2nd jam, the Hellcats brought it, adding a full jam to the score board, bringing the score to HC 4, PDF 3. The next two jams featured Dixie Sanchez vs Dona Suerte and Knottie Knoxville vs Death Vallery.

Neither team could get an edge on the other, and the score went from 5 to 5, to 6 to 6. Defense was tough on both sides, and you could tell the Putas were having to work hard, just by seeing the fierce determination in Chola’s face every time she skated around the banked end of the track. A couple of jams later, the Hellcats started to pull ahead thanks to some nice moves by Dirty Blonde, bringing the score to HC 9, PDF 7. The Hellcats kept this up for the next few jams, ending the first quarter with a Hellcat lead of 13 to the Putas 12. For the full re-cap please visit our News page.

The slight lead wouldn’t last. Dona Suerte skated against Knottie in the first jam of the second quarter. Both teams scored, but the bout was tied again - 14 all. Following that, the Putas turned the tables and maintained a small lead over the Hellcats. Going through the second quarter though, it was clear that the Putas didn’t have a monopoly on fierce determination - whoa to the person who gets in the way of a Hellcat on a mission! The lead stayed small, with the Putas only 2 points ahead for a while, but before you knew it, the Putas kept at it and ended the second quarter with a 6-point lead - PDF 21, HC 16. Both teams were giving this bout everything they had, and you could hear the excitement in the crowd during halftime. The second half turned out to be even more exciting than the first half.

The second quarter got off to a roaring start, but initially without many points scored. Then, the third jam happened. Old-school Chola entered the fray, taking off like a rocket and the roar of the crowd was deafening. Dixie Sanchez was jamming for the Hellcats, and hung back to block Chola from points, but to no avail - Chola racked up three more points, bringing the score to PDF 24, HC 15, with 5:02 left in the third quarter. The Putas kept up this trend for the next few jams, bringing the third quarter to a close with a score of PDF 29, HC 17. Could the Hellcats pull together and overcome the Putas 12-point lead?

The fourth quarter opened with Chola jamming against Knottie Knoxville. Knottie had some great jams in the first three quarters, really standing out, and becoming not just an asset to her team, but becoming a crowd favorite as well. The Hellcat blockers kept Chola at bay for a while, but ultimately she broke through the line, increasing the Puta lead to 13 points - PDF 3, HC 17.

With only a few minutes left in the final quarter, things were looking grim for the Hellcats. Then, the tide started to turn once again, with Dixie Sanchez and Dirty Blonde racking up some much-needed points, shrinking the Puta lead and closing the gap to PDF 30, HC 20. The Hellcats kicked it into high gear with the next jam. Dixie Sanchez faced off against Death Vallery. Death couldn’t make it through the HC defensive line, and Dixie snagged lead jammer status, and used it to bring home a full jam! The score now stood at PDF 30, HC 24. The Putas were nervous and called a time-out to revise their end-game strategy.

With only 4:00 left in the bout and “Eye of the Tiger” playing on the p.a., star rookie Knottie Knoxville faced off against Dona Suerte. This was a rough jam, with multiple falls for both teams and no points were scored. Over the next couple of jams, the Hellcats scored an additional point, and the Putas lost a point due to a penalty.

Then it was the last jam of the bout. One minute left on the clock. The score stood at Putas 29, Hellcats 25. The tension was so thick you could cut it like a knife. Would this bout end with a sudden death jam? It was like a scene out of an old western. You could sense the eerie music and almost see the tumbleweed roll across the floor, as the jammers, Dona Suerte and Dirty Blonde, faced off against each other like two gunfighters, putting it all on the line - for honor, for team pride, for a chance at the 2007 Calvello Cup.

The whistle blew and the last jam started. Dirty hit the pack first, but Dona was right behind, and soon was in the lead. She couldn’t call off the jam though - stepping off the inside of the track means you don’t have lead jammer status and can’t call it off. It looked like this might give the Hellcats the edge they needed to push the bout to suddean death. Dirty scored another point, but a Hellcat victory wasn’t in the stars - time ran out on the clock, giving the victory and a chance to take down the Holy Rollers in the Calvello Cup to the Putas del Fuego. Final score: Putas del Fuego 31, Hellcats 26.

MARCH 4TH BOUT RE-CAP - RHINESTONE COWGIRLS VS. HELLCATS

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

The TXRD crowd was in for another low-scoring, closely contested bout, this time with the Hellcats facing off against the Rhinestone Cowgirls.

After a close first half the Hellcats pulled away for a 42-23 win over the Rhinestone Cowgirls.

Dirty Blonde and Knottie Knoxville led the way for the Hellcats with 11 points each in the bout. Dixie Sanchez also had several successful jams, adding nine points to the Hellcats score. Also providing solid support for the Hellcats victory was Annie Afterparty with nine assists to her credit.

Emme Proper and Hottie Smoochalottie were the lead jammers for the Rhinestone Cowgirls, each scoring 10 points in the bout.

In the first jam, Dirty Blonde started the scoring, giving the Hellcats an initial 2-0 lead over the Rhinestones. Emme Proper tried to even thing out in the next jam, scoring 2 points for the Rhinestones, but Dirty Blonde scored another point, maintaining the Hellcats lead at 3-2.

Rollergazm tied the game in the next jam at 3-3, and called off the jam before the Hellcats could score any points. Hottie Smoochalottie and Knottie Knoxville faced off in the 4th jam. After breaking through some tough blocks Knoxville jumped ahead and called the jam, scoring three points for the Hellcats.

Betty Taroll and Purr anna faced off next with the Hellcats ahead 6-3 but after a fall by Taroll neither jammer managed to score.

After another scoreless jam, Dixie Sanchez was called for illegal blocking, and had to face off against Peachy Mean in a two-lap duel. As the two went at it, it was more fighting than skating. The Rhinestones lost the duel, keeping the score at 6-3 in favor of the Hellcats.

Dixie Sanchez faced Hottie Smoochalottie in the next jam, breaking out ahead of the pack and grabbing three more points, giving the Hellcats a 9-6 lead.

In the last jam of the first quarter, Knottie Knoxville ate hard rail. She recovered quickly, but the clock ran out, ending the first quarter with a scoreless jam for both teams.

Betty Taroll faced Knottie in the first jam of the second quarter. Taroll took a hard fall that took out most of the pack, alloowing Knottie to score two more points, bringing the Hellcats to an 11-6 lead.

After a successful run of jams, both teams scored points, but the Hellcats maintained their lead at 19-13. Towards the end of the second quarter, Dirty Blonde racked up another four points as Mustang Sally took a fall, extending the Hellcats lead to 23-12.

In the last jam of the first half, Dixie Sanchez scored three more points for the Hellcats, taking a big lead over Hottie Smoochalottie, and didn’t look back.

With the score at 25-12 at the top of the second half, the teams skated two scoreless jams before thigns got ugly as a fight broke out and Hottie was called for a major penalty.

The jam was re-skated with the Rhinestone Cowgirls competing one blocker short. Emme Proper got an early lead but ate rail, making room for Dirty Blonde to take the lead and extend the Hellcats lead to 30-15.

Fanny Smack of the Hellcats extended the lead to 33-19 after a close jam against Hottie. In the next jam, Ruby Sioux, now a Hellcat, scored three points against her former team with the help of some tough blocking from the rest of the Hellcats.

The Hellcats pulled away further as the combination of Dirty Blonde and Fanny Smack extended the Hellcats lead again, scoring the last points for their team this bout, bringing the score to 42-22. Emme Proper scored one last point for the Rhinestone Cowgirls at the end of the quarter, but the Hellcats took home a hard fought 43-23 victory.

FEB 25TH BOUT RE-CAP - PUTAS DEL FUEGO VS CHERRY BOMBS

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

The Cherry Bombs and Putas del Fuego fought hard in a low-scoring match-up that turned out to be the first TXRD bout ever to go into sudden death overtime! The Putas came away with the victory after Chola scored in the sudden death jam to give her team a 28-27 win over the Cherry Bombs.

Rocky Casbah started the bout with one point over Chola in the opening jam. In the next jam Chingona took on Lucy Cannon and after a hard fall by Lucy, Chingona managed to score three points to make it a 3-1 lead by the Putas early on.

Much of the bout was very close, with several jams ending scoreless or with just one point. When the CB’s were ahead 7-6, Heathen got slammed to the rail by Cha Cha. The fall put Heathen down for the count the rest of the evening. The CB’s are tough cookies - Heathen’s aching bones didn’t stop her from cheering her teammates on at the side of the track, right ’til the end. The first quarter ended 10-9, with the Putas del Fuego holding a slim lead.

In the second quarter the teams struggled to score at first, as the blockers did their jobs well, keeping the jammers from finding holes in the pack. Lucy broke the deadlock with a big jam against Death Vallery, breaking through the pack to score four points and give the lead back to the Cherry Bombs - 13-10.

After a few more scoreless jams Cha Cha broke through to tie the game against Rocky with a three point jam. She moved into scoring position with a whip from a teammate that made the difference. As halftime started, the teams were tied again, 13-13.

Rocky started the second half with a two-point jam over Chola as the CB’s looked to build some momentum and a lead. Lucy had another solid jam against Venis Envy but only scord one point. Between her and Rocky’s points the CB’s were in the lead again, 16-13. In the next jam, Lucky extended the CB lead with a solid four-point jam, widening the gap to 20-15 in favor of the CB’s.

The Putas tightened up their blocking late in the third quarter to keep the CB’s within five at 21-16 heading into the final quarter of the bout.

Chingona came through for the Putas with a three point jam against Rocky at the start of the fourth quarter, shrinking the CB’s lead even further to 21-19. Chola and Lucy battled it out in the next jam, with both taking falls before Chola was able to regroup for three points, but the CB’s also scored, allowing them to maintain a slim lead against the Putas at 23-21.

As the time in the fourth quarter ran down, the Putas got into high gear with a nice run of jams, tying the score at 27-27 with only 2:08 left in the bout. Chingona and Rocky went skate to skate in the next jam. After a tough fall, Rocky came up with a shoulder injury that sidelined her for the last minutes of the bout.

With only 1:41 left in the bout, Chingona and Lucy faced off again, and it looked like the CB’s would take the lead, but a major penalty against Cherry ‘The Law’ Chainsaw wiped away the points. Lucy and Chingona were next to jam. With under a minute left in the bout, Lucy took a fall to end the jam scoreless for the CB’s, leaving the scored tied at 27-27.

You could cut the tension with a knife. For the first time ever, a TXRD bout went into sudden death overtime, with a victory going to the first team to score a point. Chola and Lucky Harm were the lucky skaters chosen for this historic jam. With so much on the line, both skaters looked as if they were skating their first jam of the night.

Unfortunately for the Cherry Bombs Hunter took a fall and Chola, who was trailing Lucky by several yards, was able to skate right by her, taking home a victory for the Putas del Fuego at 28-27.

FEBRUARY 11th BOUT RE-CAP: HOLY ROLLERS vs. RHINESTONE COWGIRLS

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

The Holy Rollers were unstoppable against the Rhinestone Cowgirls Sunday night, with a decisive 72-43 win.

Sister Mary Jane was the top jammer of the bout with 26 points and fellow Holy Roller Smarty Pants jammed her way to 20 points. The two speedsters were so dominant they would have won the match with their points alone.

The Rhinestone Cowgirls didn’t go out like punks though, as Catalac Kidd scored 17 points to lead her team. Despite the loss the Rhinestone Cowgirls showed their mean streak with a pillow fight that went over the railing in the first quarter after a high-blocking penalty against Peachy Mean, and a bench clearing brawl in the second quarter.

Early on the bout was close with the Holy Rollers leading 9-8 after the first three jams. The Rhinestone Cowgirls picked up a penalty and lost a point after the ensuing long jump to make it a 9-7 lead for the Rollers.

In the fourth jam the Rollers started to take charge as Axle Rosie took an early advantage but a tough fall caused her skates to leave the track, so no points were scored. In the fifth jam Sister Mary Jane fought through the pack and Hottie Smoochalottie took a fall, opening the door for the Rollers to add four more points to make it 13-7. In the sixth jam Smarty and Catalac were skate to skate when Smarty got railed and took a tough fall, but she still managed to score, giving her team a lead of 16-10.

The first jam of the second quarter was scoreless but after winning an arm wrestling penalty the Cowgirls shaved a point from the Rollers score to shrink the lead to 15-10. Midway through the second quarter the Cowgirls were within five at 19-14, but Sister Mary Jane sliced through the pack untouched for four points, extending the Rollers lead to 23-14.

Miss Conduct was called for a penalty late in the first half which led to a wheelbarrow race. The Cowgirls won the race to bring the score to 22-14, but the benches cleared when they crossed the finish line, as the bad blood between the two teams spilled onto the track and they had to be separated. Helena Handbasket and Sacrilicious socred late in the quarter to give the Rollers a 28-15 lead at halftime.

In the second half the Rollers speed advantage became evident as the combination of Smarty and SMJ took over. SMJ had the better second half with 15 points as she took advantage of the tiring legs of the Rhinestone Cowgirls.

Catalac and SMJ put on a display that was like Olympic speed skating as they went head to head early and often. Smarty took control midway through the third quarter as Emme Proper was railed by a blocker, making the score 35-16 for the Rollers. Axle Rosie added four more points for the Rollers late in the third quarter, for a 39-17 lead.

Catalac, who skated 17 jams, fought hard against SMJ and Smarty in the third, but she didn’t have the speed to stay up as the Rollers extended their lead to 45-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

Rollergazm stepped in for the Cowgirls in the fourth and did a solid job of collecting points but the Rollers lead was too much to overcome. The Rollers put on a clinic in the fourth quarter, scoring 27 points and sealing the win over the rival Cowgirls.

JANUARY 7th BOUT RE-CAP: PUTAS DEL FUEGO vs. HELLCATS

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

The Lonestar Rollergirls third bout of the season took place at the Crockett Center on January 7th, with the Putas del Fuego skating away with a narrow 38-33 win over the Hellcats. The crowd was split pretty much 50/50 in support of each team, which kept the nearly 1,000 fans on the edge of their seats during the close bout. Chola led the defending Calvello Cup champion PDF with 19 points as she duked it out with Dixie Sanchez for the top jammer of the bout. Sanchez ended up with 16 points for the Hellcats in the first half, and 6 points in the second half. The Hellcats spread their star around a bit, with six different skaters taking a shot at the jammer position - Dirty Blonde came in next with 10 points. Knottie Knoxville, Purr Anna, Fanny Smack, and Lucia Furr also donned the star for the Hellcats.

In the first quarter the teams were neck and neck with the PDF holding a 12-10 lead at the first break. The PDF extended their lead to 18-14 midway through the second quarter but the Hellcats clawed back and took a 20-19 lead at halftime. The Putas would havfe had the lead but a solid takedown by the Hellcats during a two lap free-for-all let the HC’s remain in the lead.

The Hellcats’ lead wouldn’t last though! In the second half the Putas stepped it up and showed why they won it all a year ago as they held the Hellcats to 13 points for the entire second half. Chola, Venis Envy, and Death Vallery found holes in the HC pack for 18 points over the last two quarters. Guera and Maya Mayhem both took on the jammer spot for the Putas in the second half but the Hellcats managed to keep either of them from scoring.

The Putas kept moving ahead, leaving the score at 34-27 with two minutes left in the third quarter. The Hellcats relied on assists with a total of 29 in the bout but the raw speed of the PDF was too much for them to contain. Penalties also cost them valuable points as they were called for 12 minor and five major penalties. To their credit the Hellcats took the bout down to the wire, trailing by two points with just three minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, but they couldn’t overcome the experience of the PDF.

The PDF came away with a hard-fout win, despite missing a few veteran skaters for this clash with the Hellcats. Losing to the Putas by a mere five points is a moral victory for the Hellcats, giving the fans a sneak preview of surprises in store for the next bout! Final score: Putas del Fuego 38, Hellcats 33. The Putas’ next bout is February 25th against the Cherry Bombs. The Hellcats next bout is March 4th, against the Rhinestone Cowgirls.

DECEMBER 10th BOUT RE-CAP: CHERRY BOMBS vs. RHINESTONE COWGIRLS

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

The rematch that had been anticipated for months was finally upon us. The Cherry Bombs only victory of the ‘05-’06 season was against the defending (and undefeated) Calvello Cup champions, the Rhinestone Cowgirls. From the beginning it looked grim for the Cowgirls, who were minus three key skaters - Lux, Witch Baby and Catalac Kidd. The Rhinestones had some secret weapons in store, with new rookie bad-asses Hottie Smoochalottie and Emme Proper, along with Honey Homicide, a recent transfer from the Hellcats.

The rookie Cherry Bombs jammer, Rocky Casbah, started out the night with a full jam - the CB’s defense held tight, allowing no points from the Rhinestones. The first quarter continued with the Bombs expanding their significant lead. The seasoned RC jammer, Mustang Sally, couldn’t squeeze by the brutal defense of the Bombs. One Cowgirls, Scarlett O’Terror, was sent out to pasture early with an injury to her knee. By the end of the first quarter, the Rhinestones had only scored 5 points to the Bombs 16.

An impressive take-out by Cowgirl alternate Titz McGee started the second quarter, leaving Rocky Casbah starved for air. Bombs alternates Kate or Dye and Hunter added to the impressive rookie display of talent. The beginner match-ups put the fans on their feet and the skaters on their toes. The Bombs kept up the fight, scoring another 10 points while the Cowgirls mustered only 2 for the entire quarter. It appeared that the “Cherry Bomb Wall” might be weakening when the team stumbled into half-time looking beat up and worn out.

But the second half proved that the infamous Wall was only getting stronger. The Bombs came out with explosive force, not letting up one bit on the determined Cowgirls. Fights broke out left and right with plenty of penalty match-ups to keep the crowd going. The most exciting match-up of the night was a pillow fight between two non-skating team members, Witch Baby and Lucky Harm. Lucky attacked and came out victorious over the 6′ 3″ most-feared pillow fighter. With the fate of the Cowgirls clear, Mighty Aphrodite, an injured skater acting as manager for the Cowgirls, was ejected from the bout after taunting the Bombs’ best blocker, Varuca Assault, at the penalty wheel. Unrattled, Varuca answered with a deadly assault of her own. Try as they might, the Cowgirls were unable to make any headway and ended with an ego-deflating defeat and another ejection, this time losing their newest wild filly, Honey Homicide. Blood was she but there were no tears. Final score: Cherry Bombs 63, Rhinestone Cowgirls 24.

DECEMBER 3rd BOUT RE-CAP: HELLCATS VS. HOLY ROLLERS

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

The 2007 season for the Lonestar Rollergirls is upon us. The season opener between the Holy Rollers and the Hellcats will give way to a series of bouts that are sure to be full of surprises. This night started off on a grim note for the Holy Rollers, whom unexpectedly lost two of their veteran skaters. The Hellcats were ready to claw their way to victory.

The first jam of the night was a true showing of student vs. teacher - Dixie Sanchez (formerly of the Dixie Derby Girls of Huntsville, AL) facing off against Professor Smarty Pants. The lesson was given by the professor, shutting down the jam with score at Hellcats 1 vs. Holy Rollers 3. The tables toon turned. In the third jam, with a minor penalty called on Smarty Pants, the Hellcats would see to it that the professor feel just how sharp those claws are. Smarty’s punishment was a pillow fight and the Hellcats sent out Fanny Smack, the friskiest kitten of all! The Holy Rollers list, bringing the score to HC 3 vs. HR4. Jam after jam, the first half was full of intensity, both teams keeping the score neck and neck. The final score at halftime was HC 23 vs HR 23!!!

At the start of the second half both teams had shared the same taste of victory, a preview of what was to come. The audience witnessed a tremendous display of roller derby athleticism. After an exciting series of jams and penalties in the 3rd and 4th quarters, the bout closed with an astonishing of HC 35 vs HR 52. Once the Holy Rollers got ahead, they hung on to the lead and just made it bigger and bigger. None the less, the Hellcats proved to have a strong team of new skaters and the Holy Rollers proved that they remain a powerful force no matter what obstacles come their way.

NOVEMBER 19th BOUT RE-CAP: ALL SCAR ARMY VS. PUTAS DEL FUEGO

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

On November 19, 2006, the Lonestar Roller Speedway was clearly marked as the battle ground for what has now become one of TXRD’s traditions - the exhibition bout between the All Scar Army and the reigning Calvello Cup Champions. This year, the All Scar Army, composed of the best of the other four teams faced off in battle against the Putas del Fuego. The only sure thing that night was that the much anticipated showdown was going to cost someone some bragging rights.

The night quickly filled itself with intensity in the first quarter, with pride at stake for every point. The score was tied at 4-4 as the third jam came to a close. The next jam brought out crowd favorite Chola vs. Evilyn Carnit and in true Fuego fashion the lead was taken by the Putas with a score of 8-4 at the close of the 4th jam. The ASA may have expected little resistance but were quite surprised to find a team of completely united Putas holding the lead at 12-5 into the 6th jam. The battle raged over the next couple of jams with the ASA constantly trying to flank their Puta counterparts.

The second quarter gave way to the All Scars taking the lead as they doggedly pursued the victory they had come for. The Putas trailed by 10 at the half and would never make up the slack. The All Scar Army continued to forge ahead, closing the third quarter with a score of 45-37. The end of the 3rd quarter also marked a high-profile loss for the Putas with Chingona getting ejected to the game. The ASA pressed their advantage and forced the Putas into a time-out to re-evaluate their strategy. The Putas couldn’t hold their ground under the onslaught of the ASA. The final score was ASA 69 vs. Putas 46, but the night went down as one of the greatest battles ever fought. The All Scar Army walked away with another victory, proving yet again that the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls are a force to be reckoned with!
