Burn, Baby, Burn!

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Come on down to the Austin Convention Center to watch as the Putas del Fuego take on the Cherry Bombs.  After an injury-plagued 2007 season, the Bombs are back in action and givin’ it all they’ve got.  Though the Putas took a hit to their lineup in the offseason, they have retained the Triumvirate from Hell (Chola, Holly Peno, and Hell’s Belle), and they’ve taken on a few good rookies to boot.  Will those hot mamas send the Cherries up in flames, or will the Bombs send those Putas back to their street corners? Either way, this bout is not to be missed.

Date: Sunday, March 2

Time: Doors at 6, bout at 7

Where: Austin Convention Center, Exhibition Hall 5

Cost: $15 at the door, $13 presale

Rhinestone Cowgirls vs. Hellcats - Bout Recap

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

After a lot of trash-talking between the Rhinestone Cowgirls and the Hellcats, I was excited to see for myself what all of the fuss was about.  Both teams have a lot of rookies in their starting lineups, and I was curious to see the new talent.  There was a great crowd at the Convention Center–I only saw a couple of rows of empty seats at the top of the arena.  The Rhinestones entered throwing stuffed cats into the crowd, and the Hellcats made a big entrance in Indian costumes, setting up a Cowgirls/Indians showdown.  The Hellcats came out of the gates strong–Knottie Knoxville racked up two full jams.  Kategory 5 of the Rhinestones also spent a lot of time at the jamming line–she is definitely one of the new talents to watch for 2008 season.  The score was 20-14 Hellcats at the end of the first quarter.  In the second quarter, rookie Curly Suicide really kicked up the intensity a notch and skated several impressive jams for her team.  (Her pack of fans, most of whom were sporting curly blonde wigs, were also thrilled.) Despite some hard work by the Rhinestone blockers (especially Motley Sue and Mummy Dearest), the score was 41-18 at the end of the first half.  After halftime, the strong performances continued from Knottie Knoxville and Curly Suicide, bringing the score to 54-27 Hellcats at the end of the third quarter, and the final score was 70-37, the first Hellcat victory of the season.

Other highlights:

-The Hellcats mostly jammed a rotation of Dixie Sanchez, Knottie Knoxville, Curly Suicide, and Purr Anna.  The Rhinestones  mostly jammed Kategory 5, Rollergasm, Mummy Dearest, Miss Canada, and Truckstop Trixie.

-Dirty Blonde, Psycho Kitty, and Hottie Smoochalottie were all out for this bout.

-Penalty fun:  Mummy Dearest took an impressive tug of war from Dixie Sanchez.  Knottie Knoxville decisively won several  duels at the arm wrestling table.  The tiny team of Kategory 5 and Truckstop Trixie pulled through in a well skated pushcart race.

-Curly Suicide pulled off a full jam even with Knottie Knoxville in the penalty box for tripping.

-Truckstop Trixie might be small, but she takes up a lot of room on the track!  She was really working Purr Anna’s staple booty block move, which Purr Anna herself was also using to great effect.

All in all, this was a great bout to start off the season.  Two rookies, Kategory 5 and Curly Suicide, made their mark as skaters to watch and the Hellcats continued their strong team play to take the victory.
