Sword’s Recap - ASA vs HR

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Wow, what a way to start the 2008 TXRD season! A pure-D bona fide sellout! The crowd was as big as I’ve seen, and we were all rewarded handsomely. All-Scar Army vs. The MotherFucking Holy Rollers! The score was only a side note as the action on the track was fast, aggressive, and non-stop all night. But in the end, the heart of the Holy Rollers was no enough to overcome the sheer talent that was the All-Scar Army. The Holy Roller rookies were definitely wide-eyed after the first few jams. No amount of practice can prepare you for battle. As rough as it was, the penalties were evenly dispersed and were not a factor in deciding the outcome. We were treated to two arm wrestles (a split), a tug of war (ASA), a pillow fight (ASA) and a two lap duel (who knows?), and a bench-clearing brawl in the 4th quarter. The girls are back and the action has started anew. All is right with the world!

Pinto’s Recap - ASA vs HR

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

OK..first, let me say how happy I am that the season is finally here!!! Man, what a kickoff.
Don’t let the final score fool you, that was a great bout. The skaters were fired up, the refs were ready, the sellout crowd..let me say that again..the bout SOLD OUT. Heard they were actually turning people away. Congrats to the people for coming out and being hungry for some banked track action. Oh, and being loud and completely into it, too.
From the first whistle it was clear that both teams were ready to shake off the off season rust and let out the pent up aggression. This was a choppy bout, for an expo. The intensity was pretty high.
My standouts: Rollers offense- Sacralicious was flying around the track. That girl is going to have a big season if she keeps skating like that. She was fast, tough, and cut through the pack really well.
Smarty was…well, Smarty. Her skating is always an unbelievable exhibition. For those that have seen it, you know what I mean, For those that haven’t, you need to watch the spins and cuts that only she can do.
Defense– Give total credit to the captains for leading the charge. Punky was blocking pretty fiercely, and we could all see her confrontation with Chola coming 3 quarters before it happened.
Karma got a major penalty for the first time. We were all stunned by that. She clashed most often with Rocky, some pretty intense little skirmishes.
And props to the rookies, especially Cathy Lix..they put that poor girl into the rail so many times it was painful, but they took it like champs.
Standout move to me was Helena Handbasket’s signature rail move. She was getting sent over, but grabbed the rail and flipped around and stayed on the track..awesome

All-Scar standouts: offense Chola…well, like Smarty, what more can you say? She turned it up a little in the second half. She’s fierce, fast, and darn fun to watch.
Rocky…love to watch her mess with the opposing jammer before the whistle. No one plays the psychological game better, and she was burning up the track when she broke from the pack
Dixie was impressive. She was cutting through the pack really well. A good sign for Hellcat fans. [ Side note, hope Dirty's knees are OK.  She got tangled up on a jam and tweaked both of them.. get better soon!!]
Defense– um, it WAS the All-Scars, how do you pick out one? Knottie and Varuca were solid. Homicide and Hell’s Belle were giving the Roller jammers fits.
One fun lineup was the All-Hellcat (with one former Hellcat) set. Dixie jamming with Purr Anna, Knottie, Dirty Blonde, and Homicide. Ain’t nobody getting through that pack.
All in all a great bout. Fun to watch. I’m stoked for the rest!!

Notables in the crowd..I saw Loca and G Spot, Betty Ta’ Roll, Mustang Sally, La Muerta.
The Whores were out in force and reclaimed our turf. TURN 4 is home again!

Lady A’s Recap–ASA vs HR

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Hey y’all! Here’s my $.02 for the evening:
Great crowd! It was wall-to-wall people. I guess everyone else was jonesing to see some derby as badly as I was. Both teams started off skating really strong. Smarty was working her ass off–I think there were very few jams where she wasn’t jamming or blocking. Sacralicious was skating like hell’s afire (Pinto insisted that her eyes were glowing like Darth Maul.) I think she’s gotten even faster since last year, if such a thing is possible. Cathy Lix spent a lot of time jamming–and a lot of time getting slapped around by the pack. It was definitely “welcome to derby” time! Punky did a great job blocking, as did Karma. Karma got into several fights and pulled a few penalties. Definitely a side of her we hadn’t seen before! The All-Scars looked great, too–the blockers were tight, especially Knottie Knoxville, Varuca Assault, and Purr Anna. Rocky showed off some really nice footwork–she was stepping through spots in the pack and keeping to her feet even better than before. Chola was as entertaining as ever, as only she can be. She came out especially strong in the second half.
The fourth quarter got pretty messy. The ASA had pulled away and I think there was some frustration going on and some old grudges being worked out.
We got to see lots of those match ups that we love–Rocky vs Smarty. Chola vs Sac, Smarty vs Chola. There was also a really great leap by Smarty over two fallen skaters that I seem to have been the only person in Turn 4 to see. Miss Conduct was on the Penalty Wheel, which is always enjoyable. The Red Coats (Masterblader and Wes) did well, from what I could hear of them. Sound was really tricky with the noise of the crowd.
Random trivia, for those who care–production had to shorten up the track by taking out two sections to make it fit into Palmer Events Center. Wonder if that was weird to skate on–seems like you rhythm would be a little off.
Representing in Turn 4–myself, Pinto, Dirty Sanchez, Hexx, Skunk, Grandpa, Sword, WarriorPixie, Mustang Sally, Betty Taroll, Maya, Luchador, Mr Knox, and a thousand other people that I am not remembering right now.
It’s so good to have derby back–I feel so much better!!!

Rhinestone Cowgirls Header Photoshop Contest!

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Now is your chance to participate in the design of one of the team’s web pages! The Rhinestone Cowgirl’s are hosting a competition to see who can come up with the most creative/attractive header for their team page on the website.

Please take a look at the Hellcats team page to see the design Glitterati made for their team:
http://www.txrd.com/hellcats/

The requirements of the header is for it to be 974 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall. You must also include in your design in that space 7 buttons for Home, About Us, Schedule, Store, Sponsors, Photos and Contact. Submit your design as a single image, I will slice the buttons on the winning design.

The contest will run for one week, and the Rhinestones will choose the winner.

The winning designer will also be asked to provide a recommended color scheme to complement their design for the background colors on the page. The header will be used on the team page and all of the Rhinestone player pages. The winning designer will be credited for their work and a link provided to the website of their choice.

If this competition goes well, then there is a chance that we can talk the other teams into having a contest for their headers as well. So even if you are a bigger fan of another team, please participate in this competition to wow the league with your Photoshop skills so that you will have a chance to design a logo for your favorite team later in the season.

You can address questions and make submissions on the forum or contact web@txrd.com.

After a substantial offseason, the Lonestar Rollergirls are back in action and ready to kick off the 2008 season!
