FEB 25TH BOUT RE-CAP - PUTAS DEL FUEGO VS CHERRY BOMBS

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

The Cherry Bombs and Putas del Fuego fought hard in a low-scoring match-up that turned out to be the first TXRD bout ever to go into sudden death overtime! The Putas came away with the victory after Chola scored in the sudden death jam to give her team a 28-27 win over the Cherry Bombs.

Rocky Casbah started the bout with one point over Chola in the opening jam. In the next jam Chingona took on Lucy Cannon and after a hard fall by Lucy, Chingona managed to score three points to make it a 3-1 lead by the Putas early on.

Much of the bout was very close, with several jams ending scoreless or with just one point. When the CB’s were ahead 7-6, Heathen got slammed to the rail by Cha Cha. The fall put Heathen down for the count the rest of the evening. The CB’s are tough cookies - Heathen’s aching bones didn’t stop her from cheering her teammates on at the side of the track, right ’til the end. The first quarter ended 10-9, with the Putas del Fuego holding a slim lead.

In the second quarter the teams struggled to score at first, as the blockers did their jobs well, keeping the jammers from finding holes in the pack. Lucy broke the deadlock with a big jam against Death Vallery, breaking through the pack to score four points and give the lead back to the Cherry Bombs - 13-10.

After a few more scoreless jams Cha Cha broke through to tie the game against Rocky with a three point jam. She moved into scoring position with a whip from a teammate that made the difference. As halftime started, the teams were tied again, 13-13.

Rocky started the second half with a two-point jam over Chola as the CB’s looked to build some momentum and a lead. Lucy had another solid jam against Venis Envy but only scord one point. Between her and Rocky’s points the CB’s were in the lead again, 16-13. In the next jam, Lucky extended the CB lead with a solid four-point jam, widening the gap to 20-15 in favor of the CB’s.

The Putas tightened up their blocking late in the third quarter to keep the CB’s within five at 21-16 heading into the final quarter of the bout.

Chingona came through for the Putas with a three point jam against Rocky at the start of the fourth quarter, shrinking the CB’s lead even further to 21-19. Chola and Lucy battled it out in the next jam, with both taking falls before Chola was able to regroup for three points, but the CB’s also scored, allowing them to maintain a slim lead against the Putas at 23-21.

As the time in the fourth quarter ran down, the Putas got into high gear with a nice run of jams, tying the score at 27-27 with only 2:08 left in the bout. Chingona and Rocky went skate to skate in the next jam. After a tough fall, Rocky came up with a shoulder injury that sidelined her for the last minutes of the bout.

With only 1:41 left in the bout, Chingona and Lucy faced off again, and it looked like the CB’s would take the lead, but a major penalty against Cherry ‘The Law’ Chainsaw wiped away the points. Lucy and Chingona were next to jam. With under a minute left in the bout, Lucy took a fall to end the jam scoreless for the CB’s, leaving the scored tied at 27-27.

You could cut the tension with a knife. For the first time ever, a TXRD bout went into sudden death overtime, with a victory going to the first team to score a point. Chola and Lucky Harm were the lucky skaters chosen for this historic jam. With so much on the line, both skaters looked as if they were skating their first jam of the night.

Unfortunately for the Cherry Bombs Hunter took a fall and Chola, who was trailing Lucky by several yards, was able to skate right by her, taking home a victory for the Putas del Fuego at 28-27.

FEBRUARY 11th BOUT RE-CAP: HOLY ROLLERS vs. RHINESTONE COWGIRLS

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

The Holy Rollers were unstoppable against the Rhinestone Cowgirls Sunday night, with a decisive 72-43 win.

Sister Mary Jane was the top jammer of the bout with 26 points and fellow Holy Roller Smarty Pants jammed her way to 20 points. The two speedsters were so dominant they would have won the match with their points alone.

The Rhinestone Cowgirls didn’t go out like punks though, as Catalac Kidd scored 17 points to lead her team. Despite the loss the Rhinestone Cowgirls showed their mean streak with a pillow fight that went over the railing in the first quarter after a high-blocking penalty against Peachy Mean, and a bench clearing brawl in the second quarter.

Early on the bout was close with the Holy Rollers leading 9-8 after the first three jams. The Rhinestone Cowgirls picked up a penalty and lost a point after the ensuing long jump to make it a 9-7 lead for the Rollers.

In the fourth jam the Rollers started to take charge as Axle Rosie took an early advantage but a tough fall caused her skates to leave the track, so no points were scored. In the fifth jam Sister Mary Jane fought through the pack and Hottie Smoochalottie took a fall, opening the door for the Rollers to add four more points to make it 13-7. In the sixth jam Smarty and Catalac were skate to skate when Smarty got railed and took a tough fall, but she still managed to score, giving her team a lead of 16-10.

The first jam of the second quarter was scoreless but after winning an arm wrestling penalty the Cowgirls shaved a point from the Rollers score to shrink the lead to 15-10. Midway through the second quarter the Cowgirls were within five at 19-14, but Sister Mary Jane sliced through the pack untouched for four points, extending the Rollers lead to 23-14.

Miss Conduct was called for a penalty late in the first half which led to a wheelbarrow race. The Cowgirls won the race to bring the score to 22-14, but the benches cleared when they crossed the finish line, as the bad blood between the two teams spilled onto the track and they had to be separated. Helena Handbasket and Sacrilicious socred late in the quarter to give the Rollers a 28-15 lead at halftime.

In the second half the Rollers speed advantage became evident as the combination of Smarty and SMJ took over. SMJ had the better second half with 15 points as she took advantage of the tiring legs of the Rhinestone Cowgirls.

Catalac and SMJ put on a display that was like Olympic speed skating as they went head to head early and often. Smarty took control midway through the third quarter as Emme Proper was railed by a blocker, making the score 35-16 for the Rollers. Axle Rosie added four more points for the Rollers late in the third quarter, for a 39-17 lead.

Catalac, who skated 17 jams, fought hard against SMJ and Smarty in the third, but she didn’t have the speed to stay up as the Rollers extended their lead to 45-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

Rollergazm stepped in for the Cowgirls in the fourth and did a solid job of collecting points but the Rollers lead was too much to overcome. The Rollers put on a clinic in the fourth quarter, scoring 27 points and sealing the win over the rival Cowgirls.
